As the episode closed, Jim was last seen driving away from the home like a bat out of hell. Halpert is stuck with his boss and an increasingly drunk Toby, Oscar, Gabe and Ryan for what must be the most excruciating house tour ever. Thanks to Robert’s ever-winding monologues, though, Mr. Long story short: He wants to make an appearance at Robert’s, whip off a few jokes and jolt. Meanwhile, in B-plot news … actually, there isn’t much of a B-plot, unless you count Jim’s anxiety over leaving the party early as a plot worth any interest. Will Erin be successful in fake-flirting with Dwight in order to make Andy jealous? Will Erin be strong enough to defeat Andy’s girlfriend in a game of aquatic chicken? How many people, exactly, are there out there who care where this relationship is going? Not surprisingly, by the end of the episode little is resolved - Erin is confident she’ll win Andy back, while Andy is just as confused as ever. The pool-side setting, though, is more of a flimsy excuse to continue to drag out the Erin-Andy subplot that has surfaced here and there for a remarkable three seasons now. Yes, just like last week (and countless weeks before that), minimal action takes place in the office proper. So, at Kevin’s suggestion (go Kevin!), Robert invites the entire staff for one last hurrah. It’s a huge mansion, and one Robert is eager to get off his hands in the, um, “hot” Scranton real estate market. Article contentĪside from the cold opening (in which we see Dwight and Stanley conspiring in order to get Jim’s homemade meatballs…don’t ask), the episode revolves around an impromptu pool party at Robert California’s soon-to-be-sold estate. So, tonight we get more of the same, as The Office ’s producers continue to count their paycheques, and deliver tired riffs on “the office as a family” - a theme that, by now, has been hammered so hard into the cold Scranton ground that it’s all a bit pointless. Where are the comedic highs? Where are the standout episodes? Can you even name a single sight gag that worked this season? The show, frankly, smacks of laziness. Worst of all, though, the show has been constantly yo-yoing between fine-OK-sure episodes and ones that are absolutely, wholeheartedly pointless.
With mediocre plots and stick-thin character development, the sitcom feels more stale then ever. To anyone who’s been following these Season 8 recaps (and thanks to all the dozens of you! Well, maybe hundreds - I get bored looking at site metrics), it’s obvious this has not been the show’s finest year.
